CLAY AND SOIL

Clay and soil can be used to form sculptures and pottery while also making a wonderful paint. The iron oxides present in many soils (ochres) are natural pigments. These particular clays pictured were found along the grounds of Joya in Vélez Blanco, España during my time as an Artist in Residence there in 2024. I mixed the clay soils with egg yolk to create a tempera paint and experimented with painting various objects and patterns I found around Joya, including the clay jugs pictured.
