WOAD
(Isatis tinctoria)

A member of the Brassicaceae family, Woad is a plant that produces an indigo blue dye from the leaves. Used since ancient times as a blue dye, this was cultivated throughout Europe. My interest in Woad runs a bit deeper than some of the other plants I work with since its historic use coincides with my ancestral history from Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. While working with the plant to produce lake pigments, I was able to achieve a variety of blue to green hues.
